Overview

Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek & Rakaposhi Expedition 2026–2030

Experience one of the most spectacular mountains of the Karakoram with Adventure Touristik. Whether your goal is to trek through the green alpine meadows of Nagar to Rakaposhi Base Camp, or undertake a serious mountaineering expedition toward the 7,788-meter summit of Rakaposhi, we offer locally organized trekking and expedition services for international and Pakistani adventurers.

Rakaposhi rises dramatically above Nagar Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, opposite the famous Hunza Valley. At 7,788 meters (25,551 ft), it is one of Pakistan’s great 7,000-meter mountains and one of the defining peaks of the western Karakoram.

The mountain is remarkable not only for its altitude but for its enormous vertical presence above the inhabited valleys below.

For trekkers, the journey from Minapin Village to Hapakun and Tagaphari/Rakaposhi Base Camp offers a relatively short but spectacular introduction to Karakoram trekking.

For experienced mountaineers, Rakaposhi presents an entirely different challenge: a major high-altitude expedition requiring technical experience, acclimatization, permits, logistics, experienced support, and careful expedition planning.

Adventure Touristik offers departures and customized arrangements for 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030.

WHY TREK TO RAKAPOSHI BASE CAMP?

Some of Pakistan’s most famous mountain adventures require long approaches.

Rakaposhi is different.

The trek begins from Minapin Village in Nagar Valley, making it possible to move relatively quickly from an inhabited Karakoram village into a landscape of forests, pastures, glaciers and enormous mountains.

The journey takes trekkers toward Hapakun and then higher toward Tagaphari, commonly known as the Rakaposhi Base Camp area.

From the high meadows, trekkers can experience extraordinary views of Rakaposhi, the Minapin Glacier and surrounding Karakoram peaks.

Neighboring Diran Peak, rising above 7,000 meters, adds another dramatic dimension to the landscape.

For travelers visiting Hunza or Nagar who want more than roadside sightseeing, this is one of the region’s most rewarding short trekking experiences.

7-DAY RAKAPOSHI BASE CAMP TREK ITINERARY

Day 01 – Arrival in Gilgit & Transfer to Minapin, Nagar

Meet the Adventure Touristik team in Gilgit and begin your journey north along the Karakoram Highway.

Travel toward Nagar Valley, stopping at scenic viewpoints where conditions and time permit.

Rakaposhi dominates much of the journey.

Continue toward Minapin Village, the traditional starting point for the Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek.

Meet your trekking team, check equipment and prepare for the adventure.

Overnight: Minapin guesthouse/hotel

Day 02 – Trek from Minapin to Hapakun

After breakfast, begin trekking from Minapin.

The trail gradually leaves the village environment and enters a more remote mountain landscape.

As elevation increases, cultivated land gives way to forest, open slopes and alpine scenery.

Reach Hapakun, a beautiful camping and pasture area surrounded by the mountains of Nagar.

Enjoy your first night in the trekking environment beneath the Karakoram.

Overnight: Camp

Day 03 – Hapakun to Tagaphari / Rakaposhi Base Camp

Today is one of the highlights of the journey.

Continue climbing toward Tagaphari, widely associated with the Rakaposhi Base Camp trekking area.

The mountain scenery becomes increasingly dramatic.

Weather permitting, enjoy extraordinary views toward:

  • Rakaposhi

  • Diran Peak

  • Minapin Glacier

  • Nagar Valley

  • Surrounding Karakoram mountains

Arrive at the base camp area and enjoy time for photography and exploration.

Overnight: Camp

Day 04 – Rakaposhi Base Camp Exploration & Acclimatization Day

Spend a full day enjoying the mountain environment.

This additional day makes the itinerary much more relaxed than rushing up and down the trail.

Depending on conditions and the guide’s assessment, enjoy short exploratory walks around safe areas near Tagaphari.

Photographers can take advantage of changing light across Rakaposhi, Diran and the glacier landscape.

No technical glacier crossing is included in the standard itinerary.

Overnight: Camp

Day 05 – Tagaphari to Hapakun / Minapin

After breakfast, begin descending.

Depending on group fitness and the final itinerary, either camp again around Hapakun or continue farther toward Minapin.

Enjoy changing perspectives of the mountains as you descend into greener landscapes.

Overnight: Camp or Minapin guesthouse

Day 06 – Minapin – Nagar – Hunza Valley

Complete any remaining descent and continue by vehicle toward Hunza.

Depending on timing, visit selected attractions such as:

  • Rakaposhi View Point

  • Karimabad

  • Baltit Fort

  • Altit Fort

  • Local Hunza Bazaar

This cultural extension creates a rewarding contrast after several days in the mountains.

Overnight: Hunza

Day 07 – Hunza to Gilgit / Departure

Enjoy breakfast with views of the Karakoram before returning to Gilgit.

Transfer to your agreed hotel, airport or onward transportation.

Your Rakaposhi Base Camp adventure concludes.

WHY REGISTER EARLY FOR RAKAPOSHI?

A 7,788-meter expedition cannot be organized like an ordinary sightseeing holiday.

Early registration is strongly recommended.

1. Climbing Permits

Permit applications require documentation and processing time.

Do not wait until the final weeks before arrival.

2. Team Formation

Climbers’ backgrounds and objectives need to be reviewed so expedition services can be planned appropriately.

3. Staff & Porter Logistics

Experienced expedition personnel are in high demand during Pakistan’s main climbing season.

4. Equipment & Supplies

Food, fuel, tents, communication systems and expedition cargo must be organized well in advance.

5. Transportation

Domestic flights and ground transportation can become heavily booked during peak periods.

6. High-Altitude Support

If specialized climbing personnel are required, early booking is essential.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE FOR THE RAKAPOSHI EXPEDITION

The summit expedition is not suitable for beginners.

Applicants should have substantial experience appropriate to a technical 7,000-meter Karakoram objective.

Depending on expedition style, relevant experience may include:

  • Previous 6,000m or 7,000m peaks

  • Glacier travel

  • Crevasse rescue

  • Rope systems

  • Ice climbing

  • Snow climbing

  • Crampon and ice-axe proficiency

  • High-altitude acclimatization

  • Expedition camping

  • Self-rescue skills

  • Avalanche awareness

  • Ability to operate in severe cold and rapidly changing weather

Adventure Touristik may request a climbing CV before confirming expedition participation.

RAKAPOSHI EXPEDITION SAFETY

Mountaineering at 7,788 meters involves significant objective and subjective risks.

These may include:

  • Avalanches

  • Crevasses

  • Rockfall

  • Icefall

  • Extreme altitude

  • High-altitude illness

  • Severe storms

  • Extreme cold

  • Route deterioration

  • Technical climbing hazards

Booking an expedition does not guarantee a summit.

The decision to continue, retreat or terminate an expedition must always prioritize safety and actual mountain conditions.
