Long Treks (7+ days)
Few trekking journeys on Earth can match the scale, remoteness, and raw mountain wilderness of the Snow Lake Trek Pakistan, also known as the Biafo Hispar La Trek. This extraordinary Karakoram traverse crosses two immense glacier systems, journeys through the vast glacial basin of Snow Lake, crosses the high Hispar La Pass at approximately 5,150 meters, and links the mountain landscapes of Baltistan with Nagar and Hunza.
Designed for experienced trekkers looking for a serious high-altitude adventure, the Snow Lake Trek 2026–2030 takes you from Islamabad to Skardu and Askole, onto the Biafo Glacier, across Snow Lake and Hispar La, and down the Hispar Glacier toward Hispar Village before finishing among the green valleys and historic settlements of Hunza.
With Adventure Touristik, the journey can be organized as a fully supported expedition-style trek with local mountain guides, porters, cooks, camping logistics, transportation, permit assistance, and pre-trip support.

Snow Lake is not a conventional alpine lake. It is an enormous high-altitude glacial basin, locally associated with the name Lukpe Lawo, surrounded by some of the wildest mountains of the Karakoram.
The journey approaches this frozen wilderness through the Biafo Glacier from the Baltistan side. After days of trekking deeper into the mountains, the landscape becomes increasingly dominated by ice, snow, moraine, crevasses, and enormous granite peaks.
The expedition eventually reaches the Snow Lake basin and crosses Hispar La, the high pass connecting the Biafo and Hispar glacier systems.
From Hispar La, the route descends westward along the Hispar Glacier toward Hispar Village in Nagar, creating one of Pakistan's great point-to-point mountain traverses rather than simply following the same trail back.
The Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation's published trekking information identifies Hispar La at approximately 5,154m and provides regulatory information concerning trekking zones and permits in Pakistan. Exact permit requirements should always be reconfirmed for the intended season before departure.
The appeal of the Snow Lake Biafo Hispar Trek goes far beyond reaching one destination.
This is a journey across an entire mountain system.
For many days, trekkers move through an environment where there are no permanent settlements, roads, shops, hotels, or ordinary tourism infrastructure. Your trekking team carries the expedition forward from camp to camp.
The landscape changes continuously—from the valleys around Askole to moraine-covered glaciers, grassy camps, immense ice fields, snowy basins, high mountain passes, and finally the greener settlements of Nagar and Hunza.

The following itinerary is designed with acclimatization, glacier travel, logistics and contingency considerations in mind.
Mountain itineraries are always flexible. Weather, glacier conditions, landslides, road access, flight cancellations, group health and local administrative requirements may require adjustments.
Welcome to Pakistan.
Upon arrival at Islamabad International Airport, an Adventure Touristik representative will receive you and arrange your transfer to the hotel.
The first day is primarily for rest after your international journey.
Depending on arrival times, the group will meet for an introductory briefing covering the Snow Lake expedition, equipment, internal travel, trekking procedures and safety considerations.
Overnight: Hotel in Islamabad
Meals: According to selected package
Weather permitting, we take the spectacular mountain flight from Islamabad to Skardu, the principal gateway to many of Pakistan's greatest Karakoram expeditions.
On a clear day, the flight provides extraordinary aerial views of northern Pakistan.
After arriving in Skardu, transfer to the hotel and rest.
If time permits, you may explore the local bazaar or surrounding attractions.
Domestic mountain flights are weather-dependent. If a flight cannot operate, an alternative road journey may be required.
Altitude: Approximately 2,200m+
Overnight: Hotel in Skardu
Today is reserved for preparation before entering the mountains.
The trekking team completes final logistics, food arrangements, equipment checks and any necessary administrative formalities.
Depending on available time, optional sightseeing may include local Skardu attractions, viewpoints, lakes or bazaars.
This preparation day is important because once the expedition moves toward Askole and the Biafo Glacier, access to equipment and supplies becomes extremely limited.
Overnight: Hotel in Skardu
Today we leave Skardu and travel through the dramatic landscapes of Shigar and Braldu toward Askole.
Askole is one of the best-known trekking gateways in the Karakoram and the traditional starting point for expeditions heading toward some of Pakistan's greatest glaciers and mountains.
Road conditions can vary considerably because of landslides, flooding and seasonal changes.
Upon arrival, we establish our first camp.
Altitude: Approximately 3,000m
Travel: Full-day mountain drive, subject to road conditions
Overnight: Camping
The real Snow Lake trekking adventure begins.
Initially, the route follows terrain associated with the great trekking corridors of the Karakoram before turning toward the Biafo Glacier.
Trekkers encounter their first significant moraine and glacier terrain as the expedition begins moving away from permanent settlement.
Namla provides an introduction to the scale of the wilderness ahead.
Altitude: Approximately 3,550–3,600m
Walking: Around 6–7 hours
Overnight: Camping
Today we continue deeper along the Biafo Glacier.
Glacier trekking differs considerably from walking on an ordinary mountain trail. The surface may consist of loose stones, moraine ridges, exposed ice and constantly changing terrain.
Progress may therefore feel slower even when the distance appears moderate.
Surrounded by increasingly dramatic Karakoram scenery, we eventually reach the Mango camping area.
Altitude: Approximately 3,700m+
Walking: Around 5–6 hours
Overnight: Camping
The expedition continues along the enormous Biafo Glacier toward Baintha.
As we progress, the mountain environment becomes increasingly remote.
Baintha is particularly important because it provides an excellent location for rest and acclimatization before moving into higher and more glaciated terrain.
Altitude: Approximately 4,000m
Walking: Around 6 hours
Overnight: Camping
Today is deliberately included for rest and altitude acclimatization.
Rather than rushing toward Snow Lake, allowing the body time to adapt can improve comfort and safety as the expedition moves higher.
Those feeling strong may take a short acclimatization walk around the surrounding slopes while others can rest at camp.
The surrounding mountain scenery offers excellent photography opportunities.
Overnight: Camping at Baintha
We return fully to glacier terrain and continue toward Marfogoro.
As the route gains altitude, glacier navigation becomes increasingly important.
Depending on seasonal conditions, the trekking team may encounter crevasses, snow-covered sections and changing ice formations.
Experienced local guides determine the safest practical line.
Views toward major Karakoram peaks become increasingly impressive.
Altitude: Approximately 4,300m
Walking: Around 6 hours
Overnight: Camping
Today's trek takes us farther into one of the most isolated landscapes of the expedition.
The environment is increasingly dominated by enormous expanses of ice and snow.
Weather conditions can change quickly at these elevations, making teamwork and flexibility essential.
Karphogoro provides another important staging point before entering the Snow Lake and Hispar La section.
Altitude: Approximately 4,600m+
Walking: Around 6 hours
Overnight: Camping
This is one of the defining days of the Snow Lake Trek Pakistan.
We enter the extraordinary high-altitude glacial basin known as Snow Lake.
Despite its name, Snow Lake is not an ordinary body of water. It is a vast frozen wilderness formed within one of the Karakoram's great glacier systems.
Navigation becomes more serious here because snow can conceal crevasses.
Depending on conditions, guides may establish roped procedures where required.
We continue toward the base of Hispar La.
Altitude: Approximately 4,590m
Walking: Around 6 hours or more
Overnight: Expedition camping
Today represents the high point of the entire expedition.
We cross the Snow Lake basin and climb toward Hispar La, approximately 5,150 meters above sea level.
At this altitude, even moderate gradients can feel strenuous.
Weather, snow conditions and crevasse patterns determine the exact route and timing.
From the pass in suitable visibility, trekkers can appreciate the enormous geography of the journey: the Biafo and Snow Lake wilderness behind and the Hispar Glacier system stretching toward Nagar and Hunza.
Reaching Hispar La is an unforgettable achievement, but it is only part of the journey. Safe descent remains equally important.
Highest Altitude: Approximately 5,150m
Walking: Approximately 6 hours, highly condition-dependent
Overnight: High-altitude camping
We begin descending toward the Hispar side of the Karakoram.
This section may involve crevasses, glacier junctions and complex ice terrain.
As altitude gradually decreases, the environment begins changing again.
The camp around Kani Basa offers impressive views toward the surrounding high mountains.
Altitude: Approximately 4,500m
Walking: Around 5–6 hours
Overnight: Camping
Continue descending along the Hispar Glacier.
Today's terrain can involve moraine ridges, scree, glacier sections and streams.
This is another reminder that Snow Lake is not simply a high-pass trek—the sustained glacier travel makes it a serious wilderness expedition.
Altitude: Approximately 4,400m+
Walking: Around 6 hours
Overnight: Camping
As we descend farther, the landscape gradually begins to soften.
Vegetation starts reappearing around suitable areas, creating a striking contrast with the ice-dominated environment of previous days.
We continue to the Shigham Baris camping area.
Altitude: Approximately 4,100m+
Walking: Around 6–7 hours
Overnight: Camping
Today's route continues toward Bitenmal, traditionally associated with seasonal grazing landscapes used by communities from Hispar.
After so many days among glaciers and snowfields, grassy terrain can feel remarkably different.
The immense Hispar Glacier remains a dominant feature of the landscape.
Altitude: Approximately 3,700–3,800m
Walking: Around 6 hours
Overnight: Camping
Today we finally return toward permanent human settlement.
After approximately two weeks in the wilderness, the green fields, cultivated terraces and village landscapes around Hispar provide a dramatic contrast.
Road access varies depending on seasonal conditions, so the exact point at which vehicles can meet the trekking party may change.
Tonight marks the end of the main glacier trekking section.
Altitude: Approximately 2,300m
Walking: Around 4 hours, depending on route conditions
Overnight: Camping or local accommodation depending on arrangements
We leave Hispar and travel through Nagar toward Karimabad in Hunza Valley.
After days of expedition camping, arriving in Hunza means a hot shower, comfortable bed and well-earned rest.
The transition is remarkable—from the white wilderness of Snow Lake and Hispar Glacier to orchards, villages and the dramatic cultural landscape of Hunza.
Overnight: Hotel in Hunza
Today is dedicated partly to experiencing Hunza.
Depending on timing and the selected itinerary, sightseeing may include the historic settlements and heritage attractions around Karimabad before continuing toward Gilgit.
After completing one of Pakistan's most demanding glacier traverses, this cultural component provides an excellent conclusion to the mountain journey.
Overnight: Hotel in Gilgit or according to operational plan
Subject to weather and flight operations, we fly from Gilgit to Islamabad.
Domestic flights in northern Pakistan are weather-dependent.
If the flight cannot operate, the expedition will follow the appropriate contingency road plan.
Overnight: Hotel in Islamabad
A contingency day is essential for a serious Karakoram expedition.
Possible delays may result from:
Weather
Domestic flight cancellations
Landslides
Glacier conditions
Road closures
Group health
Operational or administrative circumstances
If the expedition runs according to schedule, this becomes a free day for sightseeing, shopping and relaxation in Islamabad.
Overnight: Hotel in Islamabad
After breakfast and according to your international flight schedule, transfer to Islamabad International Airport.
Your Snow Lake–Biafo–Hispar La Trek concludes after completing one of the great wilderness traverses of the Karakoram.
Islamabad → Skardu → Shigar → Askole → Namla → Mango → Baintha → Marfogoro → Karphogoro → Snow Lake → Hispar La → Kani Basa → Bakhtur Baig → Shigham Baris → Bitenmal → Hispar Village → Nagar → Hunza → Gilgit → Islamabad
Unlike an out-and-back trek, this route crosses from one side of the Karakoram wilderness to another.
The primary operating window is generally during the Karakoram summer, when glacier and high-pass conditions are most suitable.

Grade: Strenuous / Expedition-Level Trekking
The Snow Lake Trek should not be marketed as an easy trekking holiday.
Participants face several demanding factors simultaneously:
High altitude: Hispar La reaches approximately 5,150m.
Long duration: The journey involves many consecutive trekking and camping days.
Glacier travel: Much of the expedition crosses Biafo and Hispar glacier terrain.
Uneven surfaces: Moraine, loose rock, ice, scree and glacial streams can make progress tiring.
Crevasses: Snow-covered and open crevasses require experienced route selection and, where conditions demand, appropriate rope procedures.
Remoteness: Medical facilities and roads can be several days away.
Weather: Conditions can change rapidly.
Mental endurance: Extended camping and isolation require patience and a positive team-oriented attitude.
This trek is most suitable for trekkers with strong fitness and previous multi-day trekking experience. Prior high-altitude experience is highly recommended.
Preparation should begin several months before departure.
Training should ideally combine:
Long-distance hiking
Hill walking with elevation gain
Cardiovascular endurance
Stair climbing
Leg and core strength
Hiking with a backpack
Consecutive long walking days
Being able to complete one hard hiking day is not enough.
Your body should be prepared to walk repeatedly for 5–8 hours or more across demanding terrain while recovering overnight in a tent.
The Biafo–Snow Lake–Hispar route crosses an active glacial environment.
Conditions change from year to year.
A route that was safe during one expedition may be different the following season because glaciers move continuously.
Potential hazards include:
Hidden crevasses
Open crevasses
Unstable moraine
Rockfall
Glacial streams
Snow bridges
Whiteout conditions
Rapid weather changes
Altitude illness
The final decision regarding glacier routes, Hispar La crossing and camp locations belongs to the expedition leadership based on actual conditions.
No itinerary should override safety.
The itinerary includes a gradual approach and a dedicated acclimatization/rest period.
Nevertheless, anyone can experience altitude-related symptoms.
Common early symptoms can include headache, reduced appetite, unusual fatigue, disturbed sleep or nausea.
Trekkers should immediately inform their guide about symptoms rather than hiding them.
Important principles include ascending gradually, staying hydrated, maintaining nutrition, avoiding excessive exertion and following the guide's instructions.
Severe or worsening altitude illness requires descent and appropriate medical action.
Most trekking mornings begin early.
Trekkers wake, pack personal equipment into their duffel bags and prepare for breakfast while the support crew organizes camp.
Walking normally begins during the cooler morning hours.
The group maintains a steady pace rather than racing.
There are stops for hydration, photography and rest.
Depending on the terrain, lunch may be served at a suitable location along the route.
The support team establishes the next camp while trekkers arrive progressively.
Evenings generally include tea, dinner, a briefing about the following day's route and an early night.
Pass-crossing or difficult glacier days may require much earlier starts.
Porters transport the agreed expedition baggage allowance and communal equipment.
Each trekker should carry a comfortable daypack containing essentials such as:
Water
Waterproof jacket and trousers
Warm layer
Gloves and hat
Sun protection
Sunglasses
Snacks
Camera/phone
Personal medication
Headlamp
Small first-aid essentials
Documents where required
Your exact personal baggage allowance will be confirmed before departure.
Good nutrition becomes extremely important during a long expedition.
Meals generally combine Pakistani dishes with trekking-friendly international foods where practical.
Depending on supply availability, meals may include rice, pasta, noodles, potatoes, vegetables, lentils, soups, eggs, bread/chapati, meat dishes, snacks, tea and coffee.
Dietary requirements should be communicated well before arrival in Pakistan.
Food variety naturally becomes more limited as the expedition moves deeper into the wilderness.
Snow Lake passes through an extremely fragile mountain environment.
Expedition camps use designated toilet arrangements where possible, and participants should follow strict waste-management practices.
Trekkers should carry personal hand sanitizer and biodegradable hygiene products where appropriate.
Nothing should be left unnecessarily on glaciers or campsites.
Adventure tourism in the Karakoram depends on protecting these landscapes for future generations and local communities.
Flights between Islamabad and northern mountain airports depend heavily on weather and visibility.
Cancellation is always possible.
If a scheduled flight cannot operate, the tour leader will assess the available alternatives, which may include waiting for another flight or traveling by road.
This is one reason contingency time is built into the itinerary.
Travelers should avoid booking tightly timed international connections immediately after a major Karakoram trek.
The principal trekking window is summer, particularly July and August.
The correct departure period depends on:
Snow accumulation
Hispar La conditions
Crevasse conditions
Glacier accessibility
Temperature
River levels
Road access
Local operational advice
Even during the best season, weather in the Karakoram is unpredictable.
Future 2027–2030 departures should therefore be treated as planned seasonal windows until exact dates are confirmed.
The expedition crosses several climatic zones.
Islamabad can be very hot in summer, while Skardu is generally cooler and drier.
Temperatures decrease significantly as the trek gains altitude.
At high camps around Snow Lake and Hispar La, freezing or below-freezing nighttime conditions are possible.
Strong sunlight reflecting from snow and ice can also create intense daytime exposure.
Trekkers must therefore prepare for both:
Strong sun and heat at lower elevations and cold, wind, snow and freezing temperatures at higher elevations.
Every participant should carry a personal medical kit appropriate to their needs.
Typical items may include:
Personal prescription medication
Blister treatment
Pain relief medication advised by your doctor
Rehydration salts
Sunscreen
Lip protection
Hand sanitizer
Basic wound care
Any altitude-related medication prescribed by a qualified medical professional
Consult a travel-health professional before departure for personalized medical and vaccination advice.
A detailed final equipment checklist should be provided after booking.
Important equipment typically includes:
Waterproof trekking boots
Comfortable camp footwear
Layered trekking clothing
Thermal base layers
Insulated/down jacket
Waterproof shell jacket
Waterproof trousers
Warm gloves
Sun hat
Warm hat
High-quality sunglasses suitable for snow/glacier environments
Trekking poles
Sleeping bag rated for high-altitude cold
Headlamp with spare batteries
Duffel bag
Daypack
Water bottles
Personal toiletries
Sunscreen
Personal first-aid items
Depending on current glacier and pass conditions, additional equipment such as a harness, crampons, ice axe, helmet and carabiners may be required. The final technical equipment list should be confirmed for your specific departure.
International travelers should verify current Pakistan visa requirements for their nationality before travel.
Depending on the route classification and current government regulations, trekking permits, licensed-guide requirements and other documentation may apply.
Pakistan's official tourism publications distinguish between open and restricted trekking zones and describe permit requirements for restricted areas; because regulations and administrative procedures can change, Adventure Touristik should reconfirm the applicable requirements for each 2026–2030 departure.
Do not leave documentation until the last minute.
Comprehensive insurance suitable for high-altitude trekking above 5,000m is strongly recommended and may be required as a booking condition.
Your policy should specifically cover:
Trekking to the maximum itinerary altitude
Emergency medical treatment
Emergency evacuation
Helicopter evacuation where available
Trip interruption
Trip cancellation
Delayed baggage where applicable
Always disclose the exact activity and maximum altitude to your insurer.
Snow Lake is valuable precisely because it remains remote and relatively untouched.
Adventure Touristik encourages responsible mountain travel based on:
Leave No Trace principles: Carry waste out wherever practicable.
Respect for porters: Porters and mountain crews make these expeditions possible and deserve fair, respectful treatment.
Local employment: Using local guides, cooks, drivers and porters keeps tourism income within mountain communities.
Cultural respect: Ask permission before photographing people and respect local customs.
Small-group travel: Smaller, well-managed groups generally reduce pressure on remote environments.
Our complete expedition itinerary is approximately 22 days, including arrival, domestic travel, trekking, acclimatization, Hunza/Nagar travel and contingency time.
The highest point is Hispar La, approximately 5,150m.
Not in the conventional sense. Snow Lake is an enormous high-altitude glacial basin associated with the Biafo–Hispar glacier system.
Yes. It is a strenuous high-altitude glacier trek requiring strong fitness, endurance and comfort with remote expedition conditions.
Previous multi-day trekking experience is strongly recommended. Previous high-altitude experience is particularly valuable.
The standard trek is not a summit-climbing expedition, but it involves serious glacier travel. Conditions may require ropes, crampons and other glacier-safety equipment under guide supervision.
Many days involve approximately 5–7 hours, although some may be longer depending on terrain, glacier conditions, weather and group pace.
Yes. Supported expeditions normally use local porters for communal equipment and the agreed personal baggage allowance.
You normally carry a daypack containing water, clothing layers, sun protection, camera, personal medication and daily essentials.
Do not expect reliable mobile service during the core expedition.
Supported expeditions may carry satellite communication equipment for operational and emergency purposes. Confirm exact provisions before booking.
Charging opportunities become very limited once trekking begins. Carry sufficient power banks and spare batteries. Solar charging may be available depending on the confirmed expedition setup.
The expedition leader assesses conditions. The team may wait, alter timing, change the route plan or turn back if necessary. Safety takes priority over completing the traverse.
Weather-dependent flight cancellations are possible. Road transport or other contingency arrangements may be used according to conditions and available time.
Meals are prepared by the expedition cook and typically include a combination of Pakistani and trekking-friendly dishes.
Usually yes, with advance notice. Inform Adventure Touristik about all dietary restrictions before booking.
Expedition-style toilet arrangements are used during camping. Facilities are basic because the trek passes through an extremely remote wilderness.
Train consistently for several months with long hikes, hills, cardio, strength training and consecutive trekking days.
No method guarantees complete prevention. Gradual acclimatization, appropriate pacing, hydration, nutrition and immediately reporting symptoms are essential. Follow professional medical and guide advice.
Vaccination requirements depend on your medical history and country of origin. Consult a qualified travel-health professional before departure.
You should have comprehensive insurance explicitly covering high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation at the maximum altitude of the itinerary.
Yes. Solo travelers can inquire about joining a scheduled departure or arranging a private trek.
Yes. Private expeditions can be arranged for individuals, couples, families of suitably experienced adult trekkers, trekking clubs and international groups.
Yes, subject to safety, permits, logistics, available days and seasonal conditions.
For international travelers, booking several months ahead is strongly recommended because permits, visa-support documentation, guides, porters, domestic transport and expedition supplies require advance planning.
The Snow Lake Trek requires far more than booking hotels and transportation.
It requires coordination between drivers, mountain guides, cooks, porters, accommodation providers and local communities across different regions of Gilgit-Baltistan.
