Saif-ul-Malook Lake: A Legendary Alpine Destination

Saif-ul-Malook Lake is one of the most recognizable natural attractions in northern Pakistan. Located near Naran at an elevation of approximately 3,224 metres, the lake combines turquoise-blue water, dramatic mountain scenery and a centuries-old tradition of romantic folklore.

The journey from Naran is part of the experience. The final section follows a rugged mountain track and is normally travelled by a local 4×4 jeep. Once at the lake, visitors can enjoy the scenery, photography, boating when available, walking and the atmosphere of one of the highest and most famous lakes in Pakistan.

Saif-ul-Malook is also culturally important because the lake is associated with the famous tale of Prince Saif-ul-Malook and Badi-ul-Jamal, immortalized in the literary tradition of Sufi poet Mian Muhammad Bakhsh.

The Story Behind Saif-ul-Malook Lake

Saif-ul-Malook Lake is inseparable from one of the most famous romantic legends associated with the mountains of northern Pakistan.

The traditional story tells of Prince Saif-ul-Malook, who falls in love with the fairy princess Badi-ul-Jamal. His search for her forms the basis of a famous literary and spiritual tale.

The story is particularly associated with the famous Sufi poet Mian Muhammad Bakhsh and his poetic work Qissa Saif-ul-Malook.
